We are happy to announce that Urgewald will publish the updated Global Coal Exit List (GCEL) 2023 on October 19th.
A faster phase-out of coal is urgently needed to save our climate. With our new GCEL 2023, we offer a tool for financial institutions to adopt a lower relative threshold of 10% coal share of revenue and/or coal share of power production in their policies.
So far, over 70 financial institutions have adopted coal divestment policies with robust criteria. The majority of these institutions is using the GCEL which provides the worldwide most comprehensive dataset on the thermal coal industry. The GCEL also lists companies responsible for new coal expansion projects and enables financial institutions to exclude these coal developers from financing.
You will find the data and download table on coalexit.org. Financial institutions may request a version with financial identifiers at coalexit@urgewald.org. We are looking forward to sending you the updated GCEL 2023 soon!
